Thanks, but I am ok with non-streaming stuff and that was not my problem. Eventually I got an account on Astream so as not to waste any more time, and my AS3 code translation of your AS2 chat example worked fine - joy to the world! Seemingly the AS2 could pick up the server on my network, but the AS3 needed an outside server? Dunno the problem, but it works fine now. I could post the AS3 code if anyone wants it ....
